It was recently announced that the museum would be closing in April, in preparation for its move to a shiny new home next year, so it seemed like a good idea to go for one final visit to the old place.
There are plenty of shots on Flickr. My main aim was to document the museum. It's an odd place. The interior is, to be blunt, grotty (apart from a snazzy black and white tiled floor). The cafe is awful. And the exhibits are an odd mixture... There's a fine selection of old Scottish cars ( a surprising number of cars have been made in Scotland) supplemented by a seemingly random selection of other stuff - a Ford Anglia, as Volvo P1800, and old Renault, a Porsche, and so on... There's a decent selection of motorbikes and pushbikes... some trains... some other stuff... It will be interesting to see what they put in the new building.
Speaking of which, the new building has been designed by Zaha Hadid. I have seen buildings by pretty much all of the other big name architects, but I have never (knowingly) seen one of hers, so I'm looking forward to that.

I hope they think out the exhibits in the new place better. I love it but it could definitely be improved.
ReplyDeleteThere's a design brief thingy on her website under 'cultural'

......full of architect-speak and only a couple of vague images, it'll be interesting to see it when it's built!
A very imposing entrance, but from what you say it sounds like a good idea to build a new museum. Very exciting that it will be by Zaha Hadid - I haven't seen any buildings of hers either except in pictures, but I was disappointed when I was still living in Wales that the authorities weren't brave enough to build her design for an opera house in Cardiff Bay. It was quite a scandal at the time.
ReplyDeleteShould be interesting, they seem to have modern museums more or less sussed these days. Fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteSome museums are like that, a bit of a jumble, making you wonder what on earth was in their minds. Hope they think it all out a bit better in the new location.
ReplyDeleteHAPPY BIRTHDAY FOR WEDNESDAY!!!
