Aitken & Niven. Gordon Simpson. GD Young. Gray's of Goerge Street. And now Lizars.
A quick google suggests that Lizars (who became Black & Lizars about 10 years ago) have been there since 1895. They aren't actually closing down, just moving to shiny new premises, but that's not the point.
Lizars was the last of the traditional opticians. Until very recently they sold spectacles, magnifying glasses, opera glasses, binoculars, telescopes, photographic equipment and probably other kinds of optically-related stuff too. I think they gave up selling photo gear sometime last year - it was quite recently that I stopped seeing cameras in their window.
Oh well. At least Rae Macintosh is still there.

It looks such a cosy, cute shop... but I suppose that's progress.
ReplyDeleteAw... That's sad. I always liked looking in their window.
ReplyDeleteRemember me? Sorry I've been MIA for a while ..... and I haven't even got a decent excuse before you ask!
ReplyDeleteWe've still got a 'proper' opticians in the Grainger Market....they don't do camera stuff but they sell great magnifying glasses and the rest!
